There were ways in which it was great to be home in LA.

And then there was having six teenagers and a dinosaur all cramped together in a ship that didn't so much fly as jump. Not that they'd been doing that much since last night: they'd parked the Leapfrog – cloaked, of course – on Venice Beach, and there they were still, even after a night of fitful sleep.

It was a new day. They'd probably have to figure out breakfast at some point.

Not to mention some other, bigger things.

"Anyone wanna play cards with me?" Molly asked. "... Did anyone bring cards?"

"I didn't but if someone else has a deck, I'll play with you," Jim volunteered. "Might make the time pass a little quicker."

"Chaaase?" Molly tried, going for the person most likely to have thought to bring entertainment.

But no. Chase just shrugged. "Sorry, Mollster."

"We should probably be talking, anyway," Nico said from her spot by one wall. "You know, about what to do next."

"If the answer isn't 'get something to eat' then it's the wrong answer," Jim quipped.

Nico gave him a slightly dry look, despite Karolina nudging her. "Later," she said. "We need to pool our money together and plan before that, anyway. And for that, I know we said we'd go wherever the wind takes us but we should still probably talk about it a bit."

"Can I think about food while you guys talk?" Jim wondered curiously. "Please?"

"Are you gonna think about cereal?" Molly wondered. "Because I'm thinking about cereal."

Quite a bit, actually. She was a growing girl!

"I wasn't but I am now," Jim told her with a nod. "Cereal. I really want some cereal now."

"Me too, man," Chase agreed, straightening his legs. "Haven't had any in a while. Should totally get some."

Molly looked hopeful. "Lucky Charms?"

"I'm pretty fond of Lucky Charms," Jim agreed. Hey, coming back to the past had acquainted him with the cereals of today. "More marshmallow less...everything else."

"I don't think Lucky Charms are going to be in our price range," Nico said. She was already thinking about the costs of having to feed all of them, and a dinosaur.

"I can see about sending you some from Fandom, maybe?" Karolina offered.

Everyone else gave her slightly surprised looks. And no, not for the cereal thing.

The Fandom thing.

"Good point," Jim said, ignoring those looks for a moment. "It's not like that place isn't a haven for free food. It's everywhere sometimes."

"Yeah," said Karolina, who was noticing the looks and kind of starting to worry about them. "And I guess I could also get a job..."

Gert was the one who asked the inevitable question. "You're going back?"

Karolina chewed on her lip. "Um... Yeah. I think so."

"What's wrong with her going back?" Jim wondered. "I think Karolina's good for keeping in contact and coming quick when it's needed."

"Shouldn't we be staying together now?" Nico wondered. Gert raised an eyebrow too. "You like your boarding school?"

Yeah, Karolina was going to be looking a fair bit uncomfortable for the moment, here. "I... Yeah. I do. It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be." She glanced over at Jim. "I've made friends. And that doesn't mean I won't be here when you need me."

"It's not that bad a place," Jim chimed in with a nod. "Who wouldn't wanna hang at a place with constant free food?"

Jim wanted to contribute but he also didn't want to shove himself in the middle of this discussion.

"You really want to take free food in exchange for grown ups telling you what to do?" Gert asked, sceptically. (She might change her tune a bit once their current economical situation got more obvious.)

Karolina shook her head. "It's not like that. Fandom's pretty... free. And I don't have to hide my powers there. No one does. There are lots of kids who are, um, different. And it's okay."

"I don't know," Nico said. "It sounds too good to be true."

"I can vouch for her," Jim said, glancing over at Karolina. "It's not too good to be true. There's a lot of freedom. No one's mistreated. I promise."

"And you won't live with us?" Molly asked. Only pushing her bottom lip out a little bit. Still enough for Karolina to frown.

"Not all the time," she said. "But I'll come back a lot, I promise."

Chase shrugged. "Hey, if she has a choice, let her. Being cramped in the 'Frog wouldn't be my first choice, either."

"And I think you guys could probably come visit too," Jim said carefully. "I mean, I think it'd be safe. You know, when you guys get a little more settled or something."

"Yeah," said Karolina, nodding, if cautiously. They might have to run interference between the two Gertrudes, but still. "That could be nice."

Nico sighed. "So when are you planning to leave?"

Karolina glanced over at Jim. "Probably later today? I, um... I have class pretty early tomorrow."

That felt like a mildly embarrassing thing to say to a bunch of people intending to be free of authority figures bossing them around.

"Nerd," Jim said with a chuckle. "But yeah, should probably get back before classes and all. Wouldn't wanna miss anything stimulating."

Karolina quirked a smile at him that was almost a little grateful. Then she turned to teh others again. "But we'll still be around for a while."

"Long enough to find some Lucky Charms, at least," Jim quipped. "Because now I'm craving them."

"But you'll have to share!" Molly declared. "Or you'll have to fight me for them."

Karolina chuckled a bit, and ruffled Molly's hair.

Maybe they'd be okay.
